    I'm not actually joining these comms. I'm just stealing a few tables (or re-constructing my very own tables by mix-and-matching the ones the comms came up with) like the thieving thief I am. :D I have to get back into the habit of writing even when I don't have deadlines and haven't officially signed up for stuff. And Anna Min's pretty well developed in my head but nobody else knows any of the stuff I know about her because I don't write her enough! So this is me trying to remedy that.     A small box carved out of cherry wood with an ash inlay of the symbol for the new moon sits at the side of Remus' desktop. It's about the right size to house about four small ink pots once emptied but at the moment it is filled with a half a dozen individually-wrapped high-quality specialty chocolate truffles. When opened, it plays a soft and slow yet somehow cheerful piece of violin music. There is a note carefully folded on top of the truffles.


    Daddy;

    I hope you didn't find this until the end of the day. Mum helped me charm it so it wouldn't be visible until the right time and it took a long time to pick a place to put it where I didn't think it would get knocked on the floor. She also helped me with the music charm. That's me playing the violin! And I wrote the song, too, just for you. That's the only part I did all by myself. Benjy Fenwick helped with the box. When Mum took everybody shopping for your birthday, I couldn't find anything like what I was looking for so I was just going to write the song and play it for you. One day when I was working on it, Benjy was over. He started talking to me about it and when I told him the whole story he said maybe he could help. So he made the box! Without magic, mostly, he said! And he also said I don't owe him anything for it, except I have to promise to keep playing music.

    Anyway, I hope you find this at the time you're supposed to and I hope your day was good. I love you!

    "Why does a child impulsively strike at a butterfly as it flits past him? He cares nothing for the insect when once it is beaten down at his feet, unless it be quivering in its agony, when he will watch it with interest. The child strikes at the fluttering creature because it has life in it, and he has the instinct within him impelling him to destroy life where he finds it.

    Parents and nurses know well that children by nature are cruel, and that humanity has to be acquired by education. A child will gloat over the sufferings of a wounded animal till his mother bids him 'put it out of its misery.' An unsophisticated child would not dream of terminating the poor creature's agonies abruptly, any more than it would swallow whole a bon-bon before he had well sucked it."




    Anna Min lowered the book -- The Book of Werewolves by Sabine Baring-Gould -- into her lap and frowned down at the page. That didn't seem right to her. Not at all. She'd struck out at a butterfly or two in her time but it had always been on instinct. Wasn't it natural to protect oneself when quick movement was spotted at the edge of one's vision? And as for watching with interest and letting the thing linger ... wasn't that just curiosity? Was that really cruelty? Could curiosity be cruel? Was she cruel and just unaware of it because she wasn't educated enough yet?

    She closed her finger between the pages and stared down at the cover of the book. This was something that was going to worry her until she talked to Daddy about it. She couldn't do that yet, though. If any adults caught her reading this book, it would be taken away. There were too many dismemberings and murders and cases of cannibalism for Mum and Daddy's taste. There was also a lot of so-called information that was just plain rubbish. Muggles had some pretty strange ideas about werewolves in their myths and legends. They weren't wrong about all of it, though. So maybe they weren't wrong about this children-are-inherently-cruel thing, either...

    With a sigh, she opened back up to her page and continued reading. She was about halfway through. Once she finished and nobody could do anything about it, she'd ask Daddy about curiosity versus cruelty. She had a few new questions about werewolves, too. Ones that nobody else she was comfortable talking to could answer for her...

    Some Facts:

    - EXTREMELY shy when first meeting people. On the other hand, often EXTREMELY outgoing around her immediate family and a couple of family friends. The only thing that can seriously break her shyness and make her fiery with strangers is blatant prejudice, especially with regard to werewolves.

    - Will answer to any shortening of her name or any (positive) nickname that anybody wants to give her, but self-identifies as Anna Min.

    - Lollipops are to Anna as chocolate is to Remus. Also a very big fan of yellow cupcakes with chocolate frosting, raspberries, tiramisu, chocolate chip pancakes, darjeeling tea and Cornish pasties.

    - Is prone to nightmares but almost never remembers what they're about. Usually crawls into bed with a sibling after bad dreams but will go to her parents if it was bad enough. Always sleeps better when someone else is there with her.

    - Asked for violin lessons at age four and has been playing ever since. Other favorite pastimes: reading, writing, observing people, brushing Andrea's hair, helping Harry work out details of troublemaking so his ideas go off without a hitch.

    - Despises labels and always feels the need to be just a bit different. (Calls Andromeda "Nana" instead of "Gran" for that reason.)

    - Has utter confidence that when she grows up she will invent permanent Wolfsbane Potion so it only needs to be taken once and it will work forever. If not that, she says she will at least make it taste like chocolate milk instead of arse. (Yes, those are, in fact, her exact words.) And then once she's done with that, she'll go on to work on curing lycanthropy altogether.

    - Favorite flower: tulips. Favorite book: Le petit prince. Favorite colour: yellow. Favorite animal: hedgehogs.



    Some Opinions:

    On Remus: "My favorite thing in the world is snuggling up against Daddy's side and having him read to me. It doesn't even matter what he's reading. I just like being near him and listening to him. He's the best listener and the best teacher ever and I want to be just like him when I grow up."

    On Tonks: "Mum's only the most amazing woman ever in the history of everything, even if she doesn't let me read some of the things I want to because I'm 'not old enough yet.' I like that when I have nightmares she doesn't try to make me remember what they were if I don't want to."

    On Teddy: "He gives the best hugs in the world! I love it when he lets me ride piggy-back and carries me around."

    On Andrea: "I like how when one of us doesn't understand or can't do something, all we have to do is put our heads together and nine times out of ten we can figure it out with no trouble. She's always kind of there, even when she's not, so I never feel like I'm all alone. She's my best friend."

    On Harry: "I think it's funny I look more like him than I do like Andrea. I like that he asks lots of questions and listens to me when I know the answers. And he listens to my opinions, too, and tries to understand them even if he doesn't agree. He's the best little brother, a great person and my other best friend."
